The main goal of the project AN.ON (started in 2001) was the design, implementation, validation, dissemination and utilization of a prototype for anonymous and unobservable communication in the Internet. The system protects against observation from strong external attackers as well as the operators of the anonymizing proxies. The system developed in the project is suitable for protecting real-time communication (e.g. web surfing) and a variety of communication protocols. The solution has been optimized to be scalable (high performance) and accountable (payment service). All software components have been published as open source and are licenced for free reuse in further projects and software. Interfaces have been defined that make functionality of our software components available for third-party solutions. The prototype will be optimized and developed further within a spin-off company.
